After falling in two of their three games last weekend, Evansville started 2018 on the road, taking on the Macon Mayhem in Macon for the fifth meeting between the two clubs this season. Despite a heavy shot advantage with more than 50 shots getting through to the Macon crease, Charlie Finn would hold strong under pressure as Macon won it in overtime, 3-2.
Nick Lazorko made his Evansville debut and in his first shift in a Thunderbolts uniform would make it a 1-0 game at the :42 mark after following up on a Dave Williams opportunity. The Bolts would carry the lead into the second period, as Finn kept it a 1-0 game through the rest of the period and through the second. After a tripping penalty to Lee Christensen, Macon would go on the power play, and at 14:18 Darren McCormick tied it up at one aside. Macon would score again only 52 seconds later, as Stathis Soumelidis would bury a shot to give Macon the lead. Finn would keep up his performance in the Macon net through most of the third, but Evansville would break through with 4:18 remaining, as a shot by Bo Driscoll, playing in his first game of the year, snuck a shot through Finn to tie the game 2-2. Despite the momentum shift for Evansville, Macon would win the game at 1:57 of overtime, as Soumelidis scored his second of the night, winning it 3-2.
For Evansville, Lazorko and Driscoll scored a goal each and Tomas Sholl stopped 24 of 27 shots for the overtime loss. The Thunderbolts now head off to Birmingham for a meeting with the Bulls at 7:05 p.m. CST tonight. The game can be viewed on SPHL Live and can be listened to for free on the Thunderbolts Radio Network on MixLr.
